Bible: Illumination or Support?
Why is it so bizarre that G-d would take on human form? He did it when he appeared to Abraham (Genesis 18). What does it mean in Genesis 3, when G-d promises that the seed of the woman will crush the head of the serpent? Is that refering to a mere mortal, or a Divine Human? What about Isaiah 7? Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and they shall call his name Immanuel (G-d with us).
Why is it unbelievable that the G-d of Abraham would accept a human sacrifice for the atonement of sin? Does not Isaiah say,
"He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquity, the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray, we have each turned to our own way, and Hashem has laid on Him the iniquity of us all"
These unbelievable, "pagan" Christian doctrines are found in your own Hebrew scriptures.

The first question was: “Why is it so bizarre that G-d would take on human form?”
Well, the answer is simple. It is simple because G-d Himself gave us the answer:
"Then the L-rd spoke to you from the midst of the fire; you heard the sound of words, but you saw no form--only a voice.” (Deu 4:12)
But, G-d doesn’t leave us wondering WHY we never saw a form, He explains WHY:
"So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, so that you do not act corruptly and make a graven image for yourselves in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the earth. "And beware not to lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.” (Deu 4:15-19)
G-d makes it very clear that the reason He did not take on any form when He spoke to us from the mountain was that we might worship that form.
Worshipping a “form” of G-d…
Hmmm….sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Isn’t that EXACTLY what Christianity does? In worshipping Jesus, Christians are worshipping a “form” of G-d, which is forbidden – its idolatry!
No, faithofabel, G-d would not take on human form and He did not ever take on ANY form. Genesis 18 tells us that G-d appeared to Abraham, but it does not say that he appeared in a form. To make the jump between verse 1 and 2 and say that the three visitors that Abraham received were G-d in human form is not only a leap and an arrogant assumption, it is one made with bias, coming from a Christian viewpoint. You assume that when “the L-rd” spoke, it had to be one of the visitors, rather than G-d speaking to Avraham aside from the conversation with the visitors. Its all in how you read it. But herein lies the circular reasoning of Christianity: Jesus is G-d in human form, therefore whenever G-d speaks to people, it must be Jesus, it must be in a form, etc. Re-read Genesis 18, looking at it with Avraham having two completely separate interactions – one with G-d and one with the visitors – you might see something completely different.
What about Isaiah 7? That’s a whole book in and of itself, but the bottom line is this: Again, read the verse in context. Isaiah 7 is not a prophecy about the birth of a divine being, its about King Ahaz being told by Isaiah that the King of Israel (Northern Kingdom) and the King of Assyria who are about to launch an attack, will not overcome him. The child spoken of in the prophecy is not the sign, it is a marker for the sign:
"For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.” (Isa 7:16)
In addition, the Hebrew word translated by the Christian bible as Virgin, does not mean virgin. It means a young woman.
The truth is that I read the Hebrew bible for an understanding of what G-d is trying to say to us and you read it to support your already established beliefs. To quote a friend:
Christians use the bible much as a drunk uses a lamp post; not so much for illumination as for support.

Messianic Judaism is Christianity
In today’s offering in this blog (which shall remain nameless – not because of loshon hara but because I don’t want to give them any free advertising), in the article of the day, the author indicates that it is an erroneous Jewish idea that a “Messianic Jew” is essentially an evangelical Christian.
Most, if not all, Hebrew Christians believe that they are practicing a form of Judaism, not Christianity. In fact, push a Hebrew Christian into a corner and he’ll admit that he believes that he is observing the “true” form of Judaism. That is, that Hebrew Christianity is where G-d intended for Judaism to go in the first place and that traditional Jews are the ones that have lost their way.
It is questionable whether they are moved to want to be identified as Jews because it quells a deep-rooted sense that they’ve betrayed their people and their G-d, and therefore assuages a sense of guilt, or if it is simply an attempt to “out” the “in” group so that they can become the new “in” group. Either way, one thing is clear, they’ve missed the point completely.
No amount of Jewish words, Carlebach tunes or Shabbat candles can make a pig kosher. Once one crosses the line and embraces a belief system which espouses the idea that G-d would take on physical form (see the admonition in Devarim 4:12-19), to make a sacrifice for sin (has G-d ever accepted human sacrifice?), because without such sacrifice atonement is impossible (btw, atonement has always only been through teshuvah, not the sacrifices – see my post on sacrifice and atonement), and that without believing that this sacrifice was made, one cannot have a relationship with G-d, nor receive forgiveness for sins, one has removed himself from Judaism and entered a world based on mythological and pagan concepts which are completely foreign to Judaism.
If a Jew wants to become a Christian, that’s between them and G-d, but don’t call it Judaism, ‘cause it aint.

Are missionaries targeting the elderly?

A Holocaust survivor who was suffering from dementia was deceived by those hired to help her, family members said, because they claimed they converted her to their Messianic Christian religion.
The two women who were hired to play music and speak with 94-year-old Sara told her daughter Goldie Maxwell weeks after Sara died that they were both Messianic Jews, that they had played and sung songs from the New Testament when Maxwell and her husband were not around, and that at the end of her life, Sara had a revelation and acknowledged Jesus as the messiah.
They also recorded these statements in a document they gave to Maxwell after Sara's death in March.
"I sensed that they had betrayed me, because I let them into the house on certain assumptions, but even more, the betrayal of my mother and of who she was," Maxwell told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. "They knew who she [Sara] was."
Maxwell requested that her mother's last name not be revealed to protect her privacy.
Messianic groups believe that Jesus was the messiah. Orthodox Jews maintain that the messiah has not yet come, and his arrival must be anticipated. They often view Messianic missionaries as coercive and cult-like, and they are extremely concerned that missionaries are targeting and exploiting helpless people.
The incidence of missionaries using subterfuge to target the elderly and other subsets within the community is not infrequent, according to anti-missionary groups. However, it is difficult to determine how widespread this phenomenon is.
"It's probably a lot more common than we know," said Penina Taylor, executive director of Shomrei Emet Institute for Counter Missionary Studies.
Haredi anti-missionary organization Yad L'Achim (literally, "A Hand to Brethren") does not have current data on the number of missionaries volunteering in senior facilities and homes. However, Binyamin Klugger, the head of the organization's Jerusalem chapter, said he knows of many seniors whose aides spoke with them incessantly about Messianism.
Dan Sered, the director of Israel's Jews for Jesus branch, said Messianic Jews and Jews for Jesus are often thought of as interchangeable. In fact, Jews for Jesus is an organization devoted to spreading Messianism. The women whom Maxwell hired were not affiliated with Jews for Jesus, whose emissaries usually stand on the streets wearing identifying T-shirts and handing out information.
"We're very clear. Everybody knows who we are, what we do," Sered explained. "This has never been what we do," he said about the underhanded methods used by these women to gain access into people's homes and to proselytize.
Anti-missionary organizations say it is hard to keep track of cases like these. Many cases may go unreported because of familial embarrassment, and the sentiment that once someone is dead, there is nothing that can be done, explained Taylor. That is, if the families even find out that such a thing took place.
But Maxwell is speaking out. She is devastated by what happened to her mother, upset that it may be happening to others and scared that Messianic missionaries may use her mother's story to advertise and proselytize.
Sara lived with Maxwell and her husband in their Jerusalem apartment for about seven years. She was diagnosed with dementia in 1997, became wheelchair-bound and physically dependent after a fall in 2001, and in the past few years, she lost her ability to speak. When Maxwell asked a social worker to refer a pianist who could play music for her mother, the case manager recommended Efrat Gerlich, who played at local old age homes. The case manager, an Orthodox Jew, did not know about Gerlich's beliefs or activities.
Gerlich told Maxwell she knew a Polish immigrant, Adina Higa, who could talk to Sara in her native Polish and stimulate her. After a while, Maxwell suggested that Higa sing Polish folk songs with Gerlich's piano accompaniment.
About six weeks after Sara's death four months ago, Gerlich and Higa came by to speak with Maxwell about what they did with her mother and how she responded. In the course of their conversation, Maxwell discovered something shocking: Gerlich and Higa were talking about their Messianic beliefs and - even more disturbing - what they did to introduce Sara to Messianism.
Gerlich gave Maxwell a three-page document about her work with Sara. Halfway through, Gerlich wrote, "I noticed that whenever Adina began to pray, Sara began to fall asleep, and I began to put my hands on Sara and declare the victory of the messiah on her life and I chased away the demons that were trying to plague her and preventing her from receiving blessing."
When cataloging what she and Higa sang with Sara, Gerlich included a song from the New Testament's Book of Revelation. At the end, Gerlich concluded, "Sara, indeed merited in her last days to a very personal and special revelation of God. May her memory be blessed!"
Maxwell was aghast, to say the least.
"How I felt inside was stunned. I probably went white," she remembered.
Maxwell said she had no inkling that this was happening. When she was there, Gerlich and Higa played songs in Yiddish and about Shabbat and Jewish holidays, but when she went out, they played Messianic songs.
Maxwell said she now finds herself wondering whether she missed any signs. She said in retrospect, she can remember instances of disquiet during or after sessions with the women.
"There was a look on my mother's face one day that looked either highly strained or strain and fright," Maxwell said. "In hindsight, she may have been trying to register an objection or she may have felt something was very wrong."
What makes the case even more disturbing is that conversion to Messianism is the complete antithesis of Sara's life, Maxwell said. Sara was a Holocaust survivor who spent some of the war in a convent pretending to be a Polish gentile. She secretly lit Shabbat candles, and when the nuns recited their prayers, Sara thought of hers.
"Your claim that in the last two weeks of her life my mother came to believe that Jesus is the messiah negates the fundamental religious beliefs she maintained and later instilled in her children," Maxwell said in a letter to Higa after she discovered what transpired.
"Her silence, and her complete helplessness, left her wide open to everyone else's subjective interpretations of what she may or may not have be thinking," Maxwell wrote. "It enabled you to indulge your fantasy. And you have run wild with it."
Gerlich and Higa could not be reached for comment.
Maxwell charged Gerlich and Higa with a complete lack of transparency and honesty. But she has few if any options in taking legal action, because Israeli law allows the freedom to speak with others about religious views, and missionaries are permitted to proselytize as long as they do not try to work with minors or offer material incentives.
Maxwell said she hopes that the existing law will expand to encompass not just minors, but all who are powerless, like her mother was.
"I felt it was much worse than an act of disrespect to her and to me. But even more, a desecration," Maxwell said. "Really, the greatest possible offense to her, because she was helpless. She couldn't have actively fought them."

From the Destruction of the Temple to the Destruction of the Soul

This Thursday, we will observe the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. But would you believe that for millions of people in the world it is the happiest – for exactly the same reason that it is for us the saddest? Why?
Tisha b’Av reminds us of our failure as a nation to live up to the standards that G-d gave us. It reminds us that we have been exiled from the land of our inheritance, and that even those of us who physically live in the land are still in exile.
2000 years of exile. 2000 years without a Temple, the place where G-d’s presence physically dwelt among us and illuminated the world. 2000 years of wandering and persecution. 2000 years of being told that we have been replaced as the chosen people, G-d’s firstborn, the apple of His eye.
And for 2000 years the Church has marked the very event that underpins this fact as proof positive that our faith is dead and that G-d Himself has, G-d forbid, moved on to bigger and better things. Proof positive that Jesus was the messiah, that the Jewish people got it wrong and that we are hopelessly lost and headed for hell.
Since the establishment of the Jewish people our enemies have attempted to “prove” that we were not really G-d’s chosen people by destroying us. For, even the Christian world recognizes that if it were to happen, the destruction of the Jewish people would “prove” that the bible was incorrect – this is one reason that Evangelical Christians stand by our side even though they honestly believe that we are all lost and going to hell. Evangelical Christians read our bible and they see that there are promises between G-d and the Jewish people – prophecies of a final redemption and world of perfection and universal acknowledgement of G-d. Were the Jewish people to be destroyed, how could these promises be fulfilled? And if they are not to be fulfilled, and there is no final redemption, then all of their hopes and dreams are also naught.
You see, had the Egyptians managed to destroy us, it would have proven that there was not one only true G-d. Instead, through the plagues, G-d showed them that it was their gods that were not true.
Near the beginning of the 6th century BCE, the Babylonians began deporting the scholars and religious leaders of the Jewish people in an effort to tear us apart. Seeing that the land of Israel and the Jewish people were united in an inexplicable bond, the Babylonians attempted to weaken our strength by severing the tether between us and the land and when decapitating us by removing our best and brightest didn’t work they destroyed our holy temple and removed us physically from the land in the Babylonian exile which occurred in approximately the year 586 BCE.
The Babylonian exile attempted to remove the Jewish people from our learning and instead gave birth to some of the greatest torah minds of all times, the result being the Babylonian Talmud – the writing down of the Oral law handed down to us thousands of years before, now threatening to be forever forgotten. Had the Babylonian exile managed to destroy our faith, it would have “proven” that our faith was not genuine, but instead we were only strengthened.
70 years later, after we were returned to our land, our Temple was rebuilt.
And approximately 270 years later in about 175 BCE, the Seleucids, the inheritors of the Greek empire made their attempt at destroying us through assimilation.
Most of us are familiar with the Hanukkah story – we were forbidden from carrying out even the most basic commandments G-d had given us. At that time Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the ruler of the Selucids looted the Temple, massacred the Jewish people and in 167 BCE defiled the Holy Temple by erecting an altar to Zeus within it.
As a result of the outlawing of Jewish observance in attempt to destroy the spiritual life of the Jewish people, the concept of the weekly haftorah reading was born and Judas Maccabbee united the Jewish people in a way that perhaps nothing else could have done. Had Antiochus succeeded in his spiritual annihilation of the Jewish people, he would have proven that the Greek idolatrous way of life was superior to the Jewish faith and that the G-d of the Jews was impotent. Instead, against impossible odds, the Jewish nation prevailed against the mighty Hellenists and the Temple once again served as a banner to the world that the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was alive and well.
In 63 BCE the Romans conquered Israel, and many of us are quite familiar with their legacy.
Approximately 133 years after the Romans conquered Israel, the 2nd Temple was destroyed and our people were scattered. As a direct result of Rome adopting Christianity as the State religion, we saw Crusades, Inquisitions, Pogroms, and the Holocaust.
And now, the Roman Legacy has unleashed on us a new plague.
But this one is different. The others were very obvious in their tactics, they enslaved us, they exiled us, they defiled our Temple, they forbade the learning of Torah and the carrying out of our covenant (Brit milah). They outright slaughtered us, they forced us to convert and to eat treif, they destroyed our homes, our cities. Finally, they attempted to completely annihilate us and dehumanize us in the process. After that, the inheritors of this legacy of hate even had the chutzpah to deny it ever happened.
But never before in history have they tried loving us to death!
Christianity from its inception understood that the only way to justify their beliefs as the “Truth” was to get us, the Jewish people, the foundation upon which their faith was supposedly built, to believe in their messiah, to accept their concept of G-d. For, if the Jewish people, the ones from whom the concept of messiah originated, the keepers of the “Word of G-d” deny that Jesus was the messiah, the question must remain in the backs of their minds, “what do we know that they don’t know?”
But until recently, for the most part, Jews (even Jewishly uneducated ones) knew to stay away from Christianity.
Why? Because of our collective memories!
You see, we remember that Christianity was the cause of those crusades, the inquisition, the pogroms, and even in part, the holocaust.
And until 1948, most Christians figured that given our situation – a scattered people with no homeland, a scattered people with an ethnic identity, but certainly not a nation – was pretty good indication that G-d was finished with the Jewish people as a nation.
These theologians figured that all of the scriptures they found in the Jewish bible, and indeed, in their own bibles, which pertain to the Jewish Nation must instead be referring to the Christians. They now were G-d’s chosen people.
However, with the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 many of these theologians had to rethink their theology and the concept of premillenial dispensationalism was fuelled. Maybe, just maybe, G-d wasn’t finished with the Jewish people as a nation yet. And if that be the case, then maybe those promises about the nation of Israel and the end of days messianic kingdom really did apply to the nation of Israel.
Not all Christians bought into this concept however, and today we see a new movement of Ephramites – Christians who believe that they are really the decendents of the 10 lost tribes of Israel and that they, too have an equal right to live in the land of Israel as full citizens.
However, those who came to the conclusion that G-d wasn’t finished working with the Jewish nation yet, had yet another problem. Because according to their bible, Jesus isn’t going to come back until the majority of us say, “baruch habaa b’shem Hashem” – that is, until the majority of us accept YOU KNOW WHO as our messiah. When the prophecies of the end times applied to Christians, it wasn’t as big of a deal that the majority of Jews rejected him – a thorn in their side, perhaps, but not a problem. However, with this re-thinking of theology, they were faced with a really big problem – how to get the majority of Jewish people to believe in Yeshu?
Remember that collective memory?
Well, Christianity realized that to get Jewish people to accept him as the messiah, they were going to have to “put a new face on Jesus”. And so, they launched the greatest ever PR campaign – to convince the Jewish people that the Christians of today were not the Christians of the Crusades, that they were not the Christians of the Inquisition, that they were not the Christians of the pogroms or the holocaust.
A careful examination of history showed very clearly that societal pressure, poverty, restriction, and threats of death didn’t convince us to abandon our faith, so they had to use a new method – Real Christians wouldn’t do those things, they told us. So we asked, was Martin Luther a real Christian?
You see, some 300 years before, Martin Luther, a Catholic who realized there were problems with the Catholic Church became the father of the Protestant reformation. And Martin Luther himself realized that there was a problem. He himself said that were he a Jew, having witnessed the way Jews have been treated by Christians throughout the generations, he himself would not have converted to Christianity. So, clever guy that he was, he had an idea. Martin Luther told all his followers to be nice to the Jews, for surely this would entice us to become Christians.
But Martin Luther had a short fuse and 20 years later, growing weary of this game, and finding that the Jews had not responded to Christian kindness by converting en masse as he had expected, gave up, changed his tune and said that they should just round up all the Jews, throw them into the synagogue and set fire to it, burning us alive. He even advocated the physical torture of Jewish women and children.
Well, fast forward to 1948. With the establishment of the state of Israel and clear evidence that G-d wasn’t finished with the Jews yet, clearly the physical annihilation of the Jewish people would be a problem. The solution was quite simple, really. Instead of telling us to stop being Jews, they would embark on what for all intents and purposes amounts to the spiritual annihilation of the Jewish people.
What they have done instead is attempted to convince us that by abandoning Judaism for Christianity we are really becoming better Jews, truer Jews in the process. Instead of forcing us to stop being Jews, THEY are redefining Judaism for us.
In fact, they’ve even redefined the purpose of the Holy Temple. They are now trying to convince us that the main purpose, indeed, the only purpose of the Temple was atonement for sin. And in doing so, they’ve created an unsolvable problem for the Jewish people. Since there is no more Holy Temple, there must no longer be a way of atoning for sin, and we are all in trouble. Thus we need the god-man, Yeshu to come to our rescue and atone for our sins.
But you see, that’s not true either. Yes, sacrifices were a part of the Temple, but only a part, and what has always been required for atonement from sin was not the sacrifices, but what accompanied the sacrifices – a repentant heart. Teshuvah has always been the way a Jew received atonement, when there was a Temple and when there wasn’t, with a sacrifice or without.
Additionally, we must look to what the Holy Temple really represented for us. What exactly was the most important part of the Temple? Was it the altar where the sacrifices were made? No! It was the Holy of Holies – the Most Holy Place where the physical presence of G-d rested and dwelt among us, for in this place the true purpose of the Temple is revealed. It’s in a relationship with G-d, G-d’s desire to be close to His firstborn – Israel.
So, if there is no need for blood sacrifices in order to have a relationship with G-d, if we therefore do not need a holy temple, why is it that the saddest day on the Jewish calendar marks the destruction of the temple? Why is it that we long for the rebuilding of the Temple?
Why is it that in many ways Judaism seems to be much less “spiritual” and much more “earthly” than other religions? Judaism does indeed teach that there is a world to come, a life of perfection. But how can an imperfect people function properly in a perfect world unless they first have trained by learning how to perfect an imperfect world? Our job on this earth is to work at perfecting an imperfect world, only then can we truly appreciate the perfect world to which we come when our days in this imperfect world are over.
When the Temple existed on earth and the Shechinah, the presence of G-d dwelt physically with man, we were able to experience the perfection of G-d in the midst of this imperfect world, and it required very little work on our part.
Now, to experience perfection in this world requires a tremendous amount of work.
What is a mitzvah? Many people mistakenly define a mitzvah as a commandment – a rule that must be followed. Although that definition may be etymologically correct, it is hashkafically flawed. For all our life we are given but one job – to weave a beautiful tapestry, a garment with which we will be clothed when we finally do get to experience the world to come.
And unlike the slaves in Egypt who were eventually forced to gather the materials of their task themselves – they had to gather their own hay and dig their own clay; we are given the raw materials to accomplish this task. A multi-colored tapestry, made of 613 different colored threads is what our life’s work is. Not all 613 colors are available to us all; we each have a unique combination of colors with which to weave our tapestry and each one, each strand is what we call a mitzvah.
How appropriate then, that G-d gave us a commandment consisting of threads as a visual reminder that this is our work. It says in the third paragraph of the Shema,
(38) "Speak to the children of Israel: Tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners.
(39) And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of Hashem and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined,
(40) and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God.
(41) I am Hashem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Hashem your God."
Numbers 15:38-41
For now, we fast. But we know that it will not always be so. For we know that when the Messiah comes, this day will turn into a great celebration. It says in Zechariah 8:19-23
(19) "Thus says Hashem: 'The fast of the fourth month, The fast of the fifth, The fast of the seventh, And the fast of the tenth, Shall be joy and gladness and cheerful feasts For the house of Judah. Therefore love truth and peace.'
Yes, we know how all this is going to end, we’ve read the script. And in the end, instead of our spiritual enemy telling us how we are wrong, it says, continuing in Zechariah:
(20) "Thus says Hashem: 'Peoples shall yet come, Inhabitants of many cities;
(21) The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, "Let us continue to go and pray before Hashem, And seek Hashem. I myself will go also."
(22) Yes, many peoples and strong nations Shall come to seek Hashem in Jerusalem, And to pray before Hashem.'
(23) "Thus says Hashem: 'In those days ten men from every language of the nations shall grasp the sleeve of a Jewish man, saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you." '
No, its not here yet, for now we are still fasting, but its coming!
And so, we wait longingly for that day when perfection will come to Earth. Some of us may not merit to see perfection come, some of us will go first to perfection. And while we are here, we have a job to do, weaving our tapestry, a beautiful garment for us to wear to the feast that awaits us, all the while sounding to call to our brethren who have grown weary in the task, who have given up all hope or have succumbed to the lies of our spiritual enemy.
But do not lose hope, Oh Israel for Hashem says in Yeshayahu 60:14 –
Also the sons of those who afflicted you shall come bowing to you, And all those who despised you shall fall prostrate at the soles of your feet; And they shall call you The City of the LORD, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
May we all here merit to see that day soon, in our days!

Counter-Missionary: Misunderstood
Believe it or not, the purpose of a counter-missionary is ultimately to improve Jewish-Christian relations. As it says in Robert Frost’s poem, Mending Wall, “Good fences make good neighbors.” By teaching Jews why we are not Christians and by teaching Christians to respect our boundaries, we improve relations between the two faiths. Blurring the lines between the two faiths doesn’t serve to bridge the gap caused by fear and misunderstanding, it weakens Judaism and causes Christians to have less respect for the Jewish people. Breaking down the walls breaks down the distinctiveness and the different callings of each faith system and only fosters more hatred and fear.
The purpose of the counter-missionary is to strengthen the Jewish people and to teach the Christians that we have reasons for choosing to reject their faith. When they can understand and accept this, we can progress to a level of rejecting their faith without rejecting them as people and the two peoples can live side-by-side in mutual respect and understanding, agreeing to disagree.
When we say that it should be illegal to proselytize in Israel, we are not saying that a Christian doesn’t have the right to believe as he wishes, or even to worship G-d as he sees fit, what we are saying is that a Jew has the right to live in Israel, the Jewish state, in freedom without needing to worry about being harassed by someone trying to convince him that his faith is not good enough, that he needs to accept Christianity’s concept of G-d in order to be able to even have a relationship with G-d in the first place, or that his child will be convinced to abandon the faith of his forefathers. We are asking the Christian to exercise true friendship. The message we are sending to our Christian friends is this:
The Jewish people who live here would like to make a request of you. Please don’t proselytize while you are here. If you are truly our friends, you won’t. Why? Because friends are friends with no strings attached. We understand that your faith and belief system compels you to share what you believe with all who do not, regardless of their own personal faith or lack thereof.
We understand that your bible instructs you to make a priority to share your faith with the Jewish people, since Jesus was Jewish. Some even say that because of this they owe a debt of gratitude.
But gratitude is best shown with respect to the person on whom it is being bestowed and not with respect to the giver. Please show us that you respect us by not trying to convince us to change our beliefs.
We understand that the reason you feel compelled to share your beliefs with us is that your faith teaches that without a belief in Jesus we cannot have a relationship with God. Please remember that the Jewish faith has always taught about having an intimate relationship with God – and it did this thousands of years before Jesus or the New Testament.
The vast majority of us are either immigrants or the children and grand children of immigrants. We came to this country because we wanted live in a Jewish state. Had we not wanted this, we might have chosen to live elsewhere.
Please respect our faith and our feelings and refrain from proselytizing while you are visiting our home.
Good fences really do make good neighbors and counter-missionaries really are misunderstood. We are here to build, not to destroy; to foster greater understanding not to promote hatred. But we do this only through strengthening Judaism, not by blurring the lines between it and Christianity.

Thou shall not post signs on public property

Missionary leader Jim Pratt stands in front of signs he posted on a public footbridge outside the JCC. Depending on his audience, Pratt refers to himself as “rabbi” or “messianic rabbi.”
On June 28, a group of Christian missionaries, posing as “Jews,” violated city and state ordinances by attaching signs to the footbridge that spans Brays Bayou, facing S. Braeswood Blvd., directly across the street from the Jewish Community Center of Houston.
These signs bore messages that encourage Jews to accept Jesus as “lord” and “savior.”
Houston City Code (Sec. 28-38) prohibits posting unauthorized signs on curbs, sidewalks, streets, public spaces or public property (Code 1968, § 3-2; Ord. No. 70-1747, § 1, 10-6-70). Similarly, State of Texas Transportation Code (Section 393.002) prohibits the posting of signs on the right of way of a public road. Maximum fines for violating both ordinances are $500 per sign, per violation.
Upon seeing the signs attached to the bridge, neighborhood resident, Ira Bleiweiss, informed the missionaries that their signs were violating city law. Bleiweiss is founder of Bridge Houston, a rapidly growing grass-roots Israel advocacy group that also is dedicated to promoting healthy Jewish-Christian relations.
The missionaries replied to Bleiweiss’ approach, saying that the law did not apply to them, Bleiweiss said. He then notified the Precinct 5 Constable office.
A constable responded to the call, but was told by the missionaries that they had a permit for the signs. After Bleiweiss determined that the missionaries did not have a permit, as claimed, he called Houston police. Before the HPD officers arrived, the missionaries removed their signs from the railing, but not before Bleiweiss took photos with his digital camera.
Bleiweiss met the officers, showing them photos and copies of the no-sign-posting laws. He also presented a letter from the city attorney’s office, indicating that the municipal ordinance will be enforced. The officers were professional and even-handed, Bleiweiss noted. They issued the missionaries a one-time warning.
“This messianic group doesn’t respect the commandment: ‘Thou shall not bear false witness,’” Bleiweiss observed. “Nor do they respect commandment 28-38 of the Houston city code: ‘Thou shall not post signs on public property.’ ”
The missionary group behind the signs is Beth Yeshua HaMashiach. Founded and supported by the Southern Baptist Convention, the church self-identifies as a “messianic synagogue.”
Nearly every Sunday for the past several years, Beth Yeshua has sent missionaries to proselytize Jews outside the JCC. These missionaries masquerade as “Jews” by wearing kippot and giving Hebrew names to Christian concepts. They argue that Judaism is an inferior religion, made complete only by acceptance of “Yeshua” (a Hebrew name they give to Jesus).
In the past, the missionaries had attached a large banner to trees facing the JCC, and placed missionary materials in a neighborhood mailbox, in at least one confirmed case. The JH-V reported in April that both tactics appeared to violate laws. Since that report, the mailbox fliers stopped, and the missionaries began holding their signs. June 28 was the first time the signs were seen attached to the footbridge.
Bleiweiss said he and several neighborhood residents repeatedly have asked the missionaries not to proselytize Jews outside the JCC. “How would Christians feel if Muslims were standing outside the local YMCA, telling them that their Christianity can only be completed by accepting Muhammad?” he asked.
“These messianics outside the JCC continue to show a complete disrespect, not only for interfaith, Jewish-Christian relations, but also a disregard for the law,” Bleiweiss said.
The missionaries have defended their operations by claiming freedom of speech. When challenged by Bridge Houston members on issues of credibility, respect and legality, the group’s leader has responded by speaking in tongues.
Bridge Houston recommends that people call the police if they see the missionaries violating laws.

Selling our Birthright
In an article which appeared on Israel National News on June 29th, Rabbi Riskin explains some comments which he made during a video for the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem. In trying to get himself out of the pit which he himself dug, Rabbi Riskin succeeds in digging himself even deeper. During his interview Rabbi Riskin is quoted as saying in reference to his use of the word “grafted”, “This is their word, their way of saying basically that they do not believe in replacement theology. By saying they are grafted onto our tree, they are affirming that the Jews are still G-d’s Chosen People…” However, it is obvious that Rabbi Riskin does not understand what Romans 11:17-20 is actually saying. Were it not for the fact that I met with Rabbi Riskin in person, along with Ellen Horowitz of Jewish Israel back in May 2008, I might understand his ignorance, however, during this meeting I showed Rabbi Riskin exactly what the passage says. In the passage in question, Paul, the author of the New Testament book of Romans specifically says that branches were broken off of the natural olive tree (in other words, Jews who do not believe in Jesus are no longer considered the chosen people in G-d’s eyes) in order for Christians to now be accepted as G-d’s chosen people.
Modern Evangelical Christians may claim that they no longer believe in replacement theology, but their scriptures do. There is no getting away from the fact that the New Testament clearly states in many places and in many different ways that if Jews don’t believe in Jesus, they cannot go to heaven, they cannot have a relationship with G-d. Equally clear is the New Testament’s assertion that Christians are now part of the Chosen people. For all Rabbi Riskin’s quoting of the New Testament, he should actually read what it says. What baffles my mind, though, is why he doesn’t seem to remember me showing this to him during our meeting a year ago. When I showed the whole passage to Rabbi Riskin at the time, he responded, “no, that can’t be what it says”. Yes, Rabbi Riskin, it is, and it hasn’t changed in 2000 years.
In addition to Rabbi Riskin’s misunderstanding of the concept of “grafted in”, Rabbi Riskin asserts that Christianity is not idolatry because Christians don’t worship three G-ds, but rather, they understand G-d to reveal himself in three ways. While that may be true, many Rabbinic scholars have ruled that Christianity is still idolatry since worship of Jesus is worshiping G-d in a physical form – something we know is not only wrong, but forbidden directly in the Torah.
Unfortunately, in his effort to gain a strong ally in the battle against fundamentalist Islam, Rabbi Riskin has closed his eyes to a far bigger threat, for our leaders have sold our birthright for a bowl of lentils. The fascination among Christians of things Jewish is not a move towards Torah and a new respect for Judaism, it is a fascination with things Jewish while still believing that Judaism is wrong and Jews are hopelessly lost and going to hell - this is the primary motivation for Evangelical Christian missionary activity. It is my fervent prayer that Rabbi Riskin opens his eyes before he has sold our blessing along with our birthright.
